Carpet Flammability Tester

The Carpet Flammability Tester is designed to evaluate the effect of a small ignition source on carpets and other floor coverings. It supports both the hot metal nut test specified in BS 4790 and the methenamine tablet test specified in ISO 6925 and BS 6307.
Application
(1) Carpet Flammability Testing – Evaluates the spread of ignition on carpets and floor coverings.
(2) Hot Metal Nut Test – Uses a heated stainless steel nut as the ignition source according to BS 4790.
(3) Methenamine Tablet Test – Evaluates the effect of a burning methenamine tablet according to ISO 6925 and BS 6307.
(4) Material Development and Quality Control – Suitable for assessing the ignition behavior of different floor-covering materials.
Standards
(1) BS 4790 – Determination of the effect of a small ignition source on textile floor coverings.
(2) ISO 6925 – Textile floor coverings — Burning behaviour — Determination of ignitability under the influence of a small ignition source at ambient temperature.
(3) BS 6307 – Method for determination of the effects of a small source of ignition on textile floor coverings.

FAQ
(1) Which tests can this Carpet Flammability Tester perform?
The tester supports two test methods: the hot metal nut test according to BS 4790 and the methenamine tablet test according to ISO 6925 and BS 6307. The corresponding fixtures and consumables should be selected according to the required test method.
(2) How hot is the metal nut during the BS 4790 test?
For the hot metal nut procedure provided, the stainless steel nut is heated to 900°C in a muffle furnace and applied to the specimen for 30 seconds. After removal, the ignition effects are allowed to subside before measurements are taken.
(3) How is ignition spread measured after testing?
After the ignition source is removed or extinguished, the affected area on the specimen is assessed using the supplied measuring grid and test fixtures. Measurements should be taken according to the requirements of the selected BS or ISO test method.
(4) Is a fume hood required for installation?
The supplied test method recommends placing the test chamber in a laboratory fume hood. This helps manage smoke and combustion products generated during testing. The final laboratory installation should also follow the facility's safety requirements.
(5) Can QINSUN help select the test accessories?
Yes. The required accessories differ between the hot nut and methenamine tablet methods. QINSUN instruments are calibrated and tested before shipment to help ensure reliable testing. For configuration advice, additional solutions and customer cases, contact QINSUN engineers.
